BELLINGHAM, Wash. – As deer become an increasing problem in Bellingham neighborhoods, the City Council is considering putting a ban on feeding them.
“The deer do not need people to feed them,” State Department of Fish and Wildlife Game Warden Dave Jones said. “They’re going to be just fine. We have mild winters, there’s plenty of food to eat.”
Jones said that while we do have a ban on feeding bears because of obvious dangers, there is no ban on feeding deer.
He said feeding wildlife is never a good idea since it can make the animals expect food from humans and become dependent. “It’s not doing them any good,” Jones said.
Deer have been gathering in increasing numbers in residential areas, attracting predators to the city and putting the deer in a position to be easily hit by a car, Jones said.
