OLYMPIA, Wash. – The state denied a key permit for a large terminal to export coal from Washington to Asia.
The Department of Ecology says the Longview-area facility would cause “significant harm” to the environment.
Millennium Bulk Terminals wants trains to carry coal from Montana, Wyoming and other states to southwest Washington, where it would be loaded onto ships to Asia.
It’s similar to the proposed Gateway Pacific Coal Terminal on Cherry Point in Whatcom County.
The Army Corp of Engineers killed that project over tribal fishing concerns.
