BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Refusing to rent an apartment to someone based on their source of income may become illegal in the City of Bellingham.
The City Council and staffers are working on an income discrimination ordinance.
One of the main reasons for the action is a concern that some landlords are refusing to accept low income tenants who have Section 8 vouchers that help with paying rent.
The ordinance may also require landlords to give a 60 day notice before they evict renters or raise rent more than ten percent.
The council plans to hole a public hearing before making any final decisions.
