FERNDALE, Wash.- No new public storage facilities in Ferndale for the time being.

The city council narrowly passed a temporary moratorium on new storage units after receiving applications for four new facilities and with others being discussed.

City Communications Director Riley Sweeney said the issue isn’t that there is an excess of storage units in Ferndale. “It has more to do with using up industrial space for a facility that may have one or two jobs, as opposed to using that space for a factory or a processing plant that would create several jobs,” Sweeney said.

But he said storage facilities can be great for start-up companies and other businesses.

The moratorium is for six months, but Sweeney said it could be lifted sooner if the city is confident new storage units fit Ferndale’s zoning, and what Sweeney called the city’s “high standards.”
