BURLINGTON, Wash. – The old Skagit County jail will not be re-purposed as a shelter for the homeless.
The Skagit Valley Herald reported the County Board of Commissioners told Burlington’s mayor “the former jail was designed for confinement, not housing.”
They contended that it would be too expensive to re-purpose the jail, and are instead working on a partnership to potentially use a church as an overnight shelter.
Burlington’s mayor strongly disagreed, and said the county is showing a “lack of leadership.”
