Tuesday night two members of the Whatcom County Council introduced amendments to the county charter dealing with how the council puts measures before voters, and how council members are elected.

Council members Rud Browne and Todd Donovan proposed allowing the council to put amendments to the county charter before voters with a supermajority vote of 5 of 7 members.

In 2015, voters approved an amendment that allowed for a supermajority to put an amendment on the ballot while also passing an amendment that requires a unanimous council before it can do that.

Browne and Donovan say the latter was incorrectly written into the charter.

Browne also proposed an amendment that would return to countywide voting for council members.

Browne and Donovan say that would make council members accountable to the entire county and increase participation in the election process.
