MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – Skagit River flooding on Thanksgiving Day was bad enough that the Skagit Department of Emergency Management requested the American Red Cross shelter evacuees.
A shelter is now open at the Hamilton Baptist Church at 797 Hamilton Cemetery Road, in Sedro-Woolley.
The Skagit River reached its highest level since 2006 just after 2pm Thanksgiving Day.
In Mount Vernon Friday morning at 5am, the Skagit River level was recorded at 33 feet, 5 feet over flood level.
The National Weather Service has extended the flood warning for the Skagit River from Sedro-Woolley to the mouth of the river through Saturday afternoon.
Meantime, minor flooding of low lying Ferndale areas and nearby pasture lands is expected to ease by 6pm Friday; A flood warning for those areas expires at that time.
The Nooksack at Ferndale measured just over 19 feet Friday morning, one foot over flood stage.
