Another black eye for the fish farming industry in the Pacific Northwest.
Video shot by Canadian wild fish advocate Tavish Campbell outside farmed fish processing plants on the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island shows bright red plumes of bloody water spewing from pipes on the sea floor.
Campbell says the pollution was spilling directly into major migration routes for wild salmon, and tests showed the effluent contained viruses contagious to wild fish and even live intestinal worms.
The Seattle Times reports the video is stirring concerns about fish farm practices on this side of the border and comes amid fallout over the collapse of a net pen at Cypress Island last summer that released over 100-thousand farmed fish.
40th District State Senator Kevin Ranker says he’ll introduce legislation that would phase out Atlantic salmon farming in Washington by 2025.
