LYNDEN, Wash. – Lynden’s interim Police Chief is inviting citizens to attend Monday’s city council meeting to discuss the tug of war over his department’s Deputy Chief position.

The city is changing to the What Comm officer dispatch system which other agencies in the county use.

It comes with a hefty cost to the city and Mayor Scott Korthuis wants to eliminate the Deputy Chief position to off-set the expense.

Interim Chief John Billester says that would leave the department short-handed, but Korthuis says that’s not the case.

“I’ve also proposed adding a new entry level position so the net staff increase/decrease is zero”

Billester says the city can afford to keep the position.

“The city currently has 3.1 million dollar surplus which is well over what the state auditor estimates the city should have,”

The meeting is at 7 p.m.
