OLYMPIA, Wash. – Squaw Creek in Okanogan County is now Swaram Creek after Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal started a review of ethnically and racially offensive geographic names in the state.

Jayapal and the state Department of Natural Resources identified 48 places with offensive names, including Squaw Creek in Whatcom County, Coon Island in the San Juans and Jim Crow Creek in Wahkiakum County.

KIRO reports Jayapal began her effort in April 2016, saying these names stand as a reminder of times when women and many ethnic groups were treated poorly.
