OLYMPIA, Wash. – Whatcom County legislators have introduced bills in an effort to stop a property tax hike in 2018.
Republican 42nd District Representatives Vincent Buys and Luanne Van Werven introduced a bill Monday freezing the property tax levy for basic education at 2017 levels, until a new funding system in 2019 leads to reductions for many property owners.
Luanne Van Werven says without a change, the 2018 property tax levy will increase to a flat rate of $2.70 per one-thousand-dollars of assessed value, up from $1.89 in 2017.
Ferndale Republican State Senator Doug Ericksen has introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
