OLYMPIA, Wash. – Nearly a month after the deadly Amtrak derailment in DuPont, the State House Transportation committee is pressing the company and the Washington Department of Transportation for information.
KOMO reports Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar and Amtrak Senior Manager Rob Eaton said they could not answer many of the House Transportation Committee’s questions about the December 18th accident, as it is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The National Transportation Safety Board expects the investigation to last anywhere from one to two years.
13 of the train’s 14 cars derailed when it went into a curve nearly 50 mph over the speed limit. The train did not have technology installed that could have prevented the crash, and while currently not required, the Positive Train Control technology will be mandated by the end of the year.
Millar tells KOMO they hope to have the Positive Train Control system on the Cascade Amtrak trains by the third quarter of this year.
