BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Washington is ranked eighth in the nation for the lowest number of infant deaths.
The Center for Disease Control looked at statistics between 2011 and 2015.
In that time frame, African-American and American Indian/Alaska Native women in Washington had infant mortality rates that were more than double the rates in Caucasian women.
African-American infant morality was at 8.9 deaths per 1,000 live births and the American Indian/Alaska Native mortality rate was 8.4, while Caucasian infant mortality was 4.2.
Looking at individual counties, King and Snohomish had fewer infant deaths than the state rate, while Clallam, Pierce and Spokane were above the state rate.
Whatcom County was on par with the state average of about 4.8 deaths per 1,000 live births.
