BELINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council is scheduled Tuesday to discuss implementing a new ordinance that would allow for development of rural land requiring wells, now that the legislature has passed a long-term solution to the Hirst decision.
Currently, the council has an emergency moratorium in place for rural development that has left many people in limbo over whether or not they can build on their land.
County Planning and Development Services recommends the council adopt a new emergency ordinance the department put together that would allow the county to immediately comply with state law.
Then, in the council’s February 13th meeting, they could take public comment and begin preparing a final and permanent ordinance to take through public review and approval.
