OLYMPIA, Wash. — Cars are becoming more fuel efficient, meaning our gas tax isn’t bringing in as much money, and that’s why the Transportation Commission is looking at a pay-by-the-mile scenario.
State Transportation executive director Reema Griffith says a pilot program will have 2,000 drivers test a simulated road usage charge system for a year.
Griffith says they have five options for people to monitor their road usage, including two that are not technology-based, and choices that don’t track your exact location.
Findings from the year-long study will be reported to the state legislature during the 2020 session, where a long-term decision could be made.
