BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Most property owners in Whatcom County have just received their property tax bills for 2018 and many are experiencing sticker shock.
County Assessor Keith Willnauer says the legislature’s move to comply with a state Supreme Court ruling to fully fund basic education is sending tax bills higher.
He says they have to move forward under the law that was passed during last year’s legislative session but things could change with numerous proposals in both the House and Senate aimed at giving tax payers a break.
Willnauer says they’re working with lawmakers as they consider any changes to the tax law.
