BELLINGHAM, Wash. – About 20 years of work to preserve a treasured parcel of land south of Bellingham has paid off with a state Supreme Court decision turning away a lawsuit against the Chuckanut Community Forest Park District.

The district was approved by voters in 2013 but a lawsuit challenged the legality of the taxes it’s been collecting to protect the property, which is also known as the Hundred Acre Wood.

The tax has been found to be legal by lower courts and yesterday (Wednesday) the Supreme Court denied the plaintiffs appeal.

The tax money is used in part to reimburse the City of Bellingham which purchased the land to preserve it from development.
