A self- described anti-capitalist organization in Bellingham has revived claims that a Sumas berry farm caused a farm worker’s death last summer while trying to organize a boycott of the farm’s products.
The Capital Press reports the group Community to Community Development emailed an “Action Alert” Saturday asking supports to not buy berries with the Naturipe label.
The organization reportedly restated claims Sarbanand farms was to blame for the death of Honesto Silva Ibarra.
A February 1st news release from the Washington Department of Labor and Industries said an autopsy conducted by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the death was from natural causes, and not related to occupational issues.
Community to Community has been in previous disputes with Western Washington farms.
The organization was active in boycotting Driscoll’s berries and organizing a union to represent workers at Sakuma Brothers Farms in Skagit County.
