SEATTLE, Wash. – Researchers have found Puget Sound chinook salmonĀ  are picking up human drugs as they swim through effluent of wastewater-treatment plants, and it may be hurting their survival.

The Seattle Times reports new research from the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle has found juvenile salmon are ingesting drugs like Prozac, Benadryl, Advil and Lipitor, disrupting growth and metabolism at a key point in their development.

The report says waste treatment plants are mostly unable to filter drug residues out of their effluent.
