MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A young Mount Vernon man died early Monday morning when he was hit by a train.

Police say the 19-year-old, who has not been identified, was dead when crews arrived on scene after reports came in just before 2 AM about the collision.

The man was walking on the tracks when a BNSF freight train rounded a bend behind him, applied emergency brakes and sounded its horn, but couldn’t avoid hitting him when he didn’t move from the tracks.

Investigators are trying to determine why the teen was on the tracks and didn’t move, and are asking witnesses or anyone with more information on the incident to contact the Mount Vernon Police at 360-336-6271 or the 24-hour dispatch at 360-428-3211.
