BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Traffic on southbound I-5 is moving smoothly Friday morning, but it was backed up for miles Thursday following a crash involving two semis near Nulle Road.
The freeway was closed and traffic was diverted at North Lake Samish. At one point, traffic was backed up all the way to Samish Way in south Bellingham.
The State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said the crash was caused by a semi driver from Delta B.C. who was traveling north on I-5 but crossed the median and hit another semi truck traveling on southbound I-5.
Axtman said the southbound driver suffered minor injuries.
The crash happened at 2 a.m. and the freeway wasn’t re-opened until about 9:30.
Axtman said the cause of the crash is under investigation but fatigue may have been a factor.
