PORT ANGELES, Wash. – The Coast Guard Cutter Active is scheduled to return to Port Angeles on May 26 after encountering COVID-19 and seizing more than a ton of cocaine in the East Pacific.

On May 12th the Active stopped a swift boat 200 miles off the coast of El Salvador and took three suspected smugglers and their $37 million cargo into custody.

One was showing symptoms of COVID-19 and all three tested positive when they were handed over to the Justice Department in San Diego.

The crew took safety measures when handling the suspects and disinfected the ship and practiced strict measures while heading back to home port.

The Coast Guard says the entire Active crew has tested negative and will continue to self- monitor once they’re back in Port Angeles.
