BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The man accused of murdering his mother and disposing of her body in Lake Samish was found competent to stand trial Thursday.

Court documents show Western State Hospital doctors deem Matthew Gregory competent to assist in his defense, but recommended an additional evaluation prior to release to ensure he does not pose a risk to himself or others.

A neighbor on Harris Avenue says they heard screaming late July 28 followed by silence and multiple thuds that sounded like body blows coming from Frances Gregory’s home.

The next day Frances’ body was found wrapped in a blanket and floating in Lake Samish.

Her son Matthew was arrested not long after and is set to stand trial in October.
