MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — The Mount Vernon man accused of beheading his girlfriend because he said God told him to “strike her down” pleaded not guilty Thursday.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports two children found Vanessa Cons’ body August 25 after coming home from church and police believe Timothy Paul Hernandez killed Cons in front of his youngest child, a 3-year-old girl.

Police tracked down Hernandez at the Cascade Mall not long after finding Cons’ body and say he had the girl with him.

His attorney had argued he be released to stay with his sister, but past offenses including an incest conviction, led the judge to set bail at $1 million and impose no-contact orders with the three children involved.
