OLYMPIA, Wash. — More than $500,000 recovered from a bankrupt sham charity will go to help underinsured women get breast cancer screenings.
The State Attorney General’s Office began investigating the Breast Cancer Prevention Fund in 2011 after complaints that it was misleading donors.
They found the president of the charity’s board James Paton was giving a large portion of the funds raised to a telemarketing firm he owned, even pocketing millions of the dollars himself.
As part of a $1.6 million settlement, Washington received more than $500,000 while California and Texas split the remainder.
