SAN JUAN ISLANDS, Wash. – A man from Alberta is headed to prison for trying to smuggle almost three-quarters of a ton of meth from the U.S. into Canada.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says the Coast Guard boarded 51-year-old Karl Faupel’s speed boat near San Juan Island last May 25th.

The 18-foot boat was riding low in the water and Coast Guard personnel found 28 locked duffle bags on board.

Faupel was arrested and the boat was taken to the Bellingham Coast Guard Station where a drug dog reacted to the cargo.

The duffle bags contained over 500 packages of highly pure methamphetamine weighing over 1,400 pounds.

Faupel was sentenced on Tuesday, October 11th, to ten years in federal prison.
