SEATTLE, Wash. — American Airlines joins Starbucks in getting rid of plastic straws and drink stirs and replacing them with biodegradable alternatives.

The airline says starting this month in its airport lounges it will serve drinks with straw and wood stir sticks and begin moving to what it called eco-friendly flatware.

American, the world’s biggest airline, says it will replace plastic stir sticks with ones made from bamboo on airplanes in November.

The airline says this will eliminate more than 71,000 pounds of plastic a year.

Starbucks also announced on Monday that it’s phasing out plastic straws.
