FERNDALE, Wash. — October is National Bullying Prevention Month and besides using this time to emphasize the issue, the Ferndale School District says they have added more counselors to its staff.
With 11 counselors, each school now has their own and the district created the new position of Social & Emotional Learning Coordinator to oversee them.
Superintendent Dr. Linda Quinn says it’s more than bullying, but helping students with self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
Coordinator Patti Hoelzle says with the new pressures and struggles in today’s society “students need a different set of social and emotional skills” than in the past.
