EVERETT, Wash. — More than 100-years after it sank, an Everett-based company is ready to survey the Titanic wreckage using its new submersible.

KOMO reports the last manned dive to the Titanic was in 2005, and the new submersible from OceanGate, named ‘Titan,’ replaces its predecessor’s steel hull with carbon fiber.

Tony Nissen is the Director of Engineering and says the Titan can dive about 4,000 meters and withstand more than 150-million-pounds of force.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush tells KOMO being able to map and assess the condition of the sunken boat goes beyond just the Titanic.

Rush says tens-of-thousands of ships sank during World War II, many of which were carrying chemicals and fuel.

Titan would allow them to find and survey the sunken wreckage and assess how it is affecting surrounding water and life.

They plan to dive in June.
