ANACORTES, Wash. — Ferry riders will have to pay more to get to Guemes Island soon.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports county commissioners voted Monday to add a surcharge on tickets from Anacortes to Guemes Island.
The cost will depend on the size of vehicles, but it will increase by 20% on average.
Officials expect the surcharge to raise more than $200,000 towards the purchase of a new ferry.
The county has been looking into replacing the Guemes Island ferry with an electric vessel.
The surcharge will go into effect August 1.
