BLAINE, Wash. – After weeks of trapping and searching, the state Department of Agriculture has located an Asian giant hornet nest in Whatcom County.
Entomologists trapped several live hornets on Wednesday and Thursday and a radio tracker on one led them to the nest on private property between Blaine and Lynden.
They were surprised that the nest was in a tree as most are assumed to be underground.
Managing department entomologist Sven Spichiger says they’ll attempt to destroy the nest early Saturday by sucking most of the hornets out then sealing the tree.
This is the first nest found in the U.S.
The invasive species is the largest hornet in the world and preys on honey bees and other insects.
