The Mariners got off to a fast start in Houston but collapsed down the stretch, losing game one 8-7. Seattle led 4-0 after just two innings and had a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning.

Houston rallied late and scored five runs in the final two innings. The comeback started with an Alex Bregman homer in the 8th that also brought Yordan Alvarez in for a run.

Alvarez got a chance to be the hero in the bottom of the 9th, down two runs with two outs and Jake Meyers and Jeremy Pena on base. The Mariners put former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray in to close the game, but Alvarez took advantage when Ray threw two fastballs in a row, destroying the second into the stands for a walk-off homerun and a game one win.

Logan Gilbert got the start on the mound for the Mariners, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing five hits and three runs with five strikeouts. Both J.P. Crawford and Eugenio Suarez homered for the Mariners.

Game two of the five game series will take place in Houston on Thursday, with first pitch at 12:37pm. Luis Castillo will get the start for Seattle as they try to steal game two on the road.
