OLYMPIA, Wash. — A Bellingham man is accused of shooting another person during competing protests near the state capitol Saturday.

The Olympian reports 25-year-old Forest M. Machala is held in Thurston County on $50,000 bail.

The shooting occurred as supporters of President Trump clashed with anti-fascist demonstrators.

A 20-year-old man was seriously wounded.

An attorney for Machala told the court Monday that it was likely a sef-defense situation.

The State Patrol is investigating.
