TOFINO, B.C. — A newborn orca calf was spotted with the J Pod.
The Tofino Whale Centre posted a blog with images of the orcas four miles from Lennard Light on Vancouver Island.
The whale watching experts determined the whales, swimming with a brand new baby, were members of the J Pod of Southern Resident killer whales.
The whale population has been suffering as their primary food source, Chinook salmon, declines in numbers.
According to the Center for Whale Research, no calf of the Southern Residents born in the last three years has survived.
