BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Bellingham City Council is coming out hard against a proposed initiative that would keep transgender people from being able to use the bathroom of their choice.

Council passed a resolution last night urging people not to sign the petition that would put I-1552 on the ballot and to vote ‘no’ if the measure does come before voters.

Several people spoke in support of the resolution:

“Bill 1552 was created out of fear and out of ignorance.”

“The message was clear, you are sub-normal, and do not deserve respect, or even manners.”

“As a non-binary trans person, I’ve been yelled at, aggressively questioned, and physically threatened when trying to access public restrooms.”

The measure would force transgender people to use restrooms based on their biological sex at birth.

Public schools could be fined $5,000 for each time a transgender student is caught in the wrong restroom.
