LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. – A bear wanders too close to a school for comfort.

A Lummi Nation School employee on their way to work today first spotted the bear about a quarter-mile from the campus.

That triggered a lockdown just before 2:30.

The Lummi Police Department arrived help get students onto buses and on their way home.

Since the bear was so close, some of the buses had to be delayed about a half hour.

“About the time we released our elementary students, the bear was about 50 yards from the front of the school.”

That’s according to Antonio Marquez, who works there.

“We allowed our kids to exit, but only with police escort.”

The school has now posted tips on what to do when encountering a bear on their website.
