BELLINGHAM, Wash. — One thousand acres of land in Bellingham has been permanently protected in the name of wildlife.
The Conservation Alliance, an organization of environmental-minded businesses including local members like American Alpine Institute and Superfeet, granted Whatcom Land Trust $45,000 to help fund the permanent protection of land in the Skookum Creek Wildlife Corridor.
It encompasses 1,000 acres of maturing riparian forest and uplands and over 2 miles of upper Skookum Creek, and will improve biodiversity, watershed health, and recreation in the Upper South Fork Nooksack River Basin.
The Land Trust has also partnered with local tribes to increase salmon recovery and with Backcountry Horsemen and other outdoor groups to ensure public access and recreational opportunities in the area.
