BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It was a full house for both afternoon and evening meetings Monday as the Bellingham City Council received final recommendations from its Climate Action Task Force.

The council established the task force in 2018 to create a plan for powering the city with renewable energy exclusively by 2035.

Eliminating natural gas use was one of the most criticized parts of the plan during the public comment period.

But many spoke in favor of the plan, which includes rules for electrifying existing buildings and new construction along with recommendations for transportation and how electricity is produced.

The council will now consider the task force recommendations.

Any actions it considers will undergo more research, cost analysis and public comment.
