SEATTLE, Wash. — Landlords across Washington are breaking Governor Jay Inslee’s eviction moratorium.
KING-5 reports the attorney general’s office is experiencing a flood of violation reports from tenants alleging landlords are adding late penalties or issuing eviction notices.
A photo posted on KING-5’s article shows an email apparently sent from Bellingham-based Landmark Real Estate.
In response to a tenant requesting rental relief, they say the tenant must pay at least half of April’s rent before they can approve it.
Landmark Real Estate owner Troy Mulyat told KGMI that the company is sympathetic to the extreme economic challenges faced now by tenants due to the coronavirus pandemic and the landlords they represent are respecting that moratorium.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson says he understands landlords are struggling, but they still need to follow the governor’s proclamation.
