OLYMPIA, Wash. — A Bellingham City Council member and a Bellingham activist are among three finalists picked by Democrats to replace retiring 40th District State Representative Jeff Morris.
The Mount Vernon Democrat is stepping down next month after serving 23 years in the state legislature.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports precinct committee officers met Saturday and picked Bellingham environmental organizer Alex Ramel, Bellingham City Council member Michael Lilliquist and Mount Vernon Schools counselor Marco Morales as finalists to fill the seat.
Ramel ran for the House in the 40th District in 2018 and was the officers top pick.
Lilliquist is serving his third term on the Bellingham City Council.
Morales specializes in helping migrant kids graduated from Mount Vernon Schools.
The 40th District covers Skagit, San Juan and southern Whatcom Counties.
Governing boards from the counties will pick a replacement from the finalists on January 6th.
