BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham City Councilman has proposed a new tax to fund affordable housing programs.
Dan Hammill has a proposed a 0.1% city sales tax that could raise up to $3 million to provide for affordable housing that will address the root cause of homelessness.
He said it will also provide for services.
This follows the passing of House Bill 1590, signed into law last March by Governor Inslee.
The law authorized cities or counties to impose the local sales taxes for housing without needing to be subject to the approval of a majority of voters at a general or special election.
The proposal will have a hearing March 8th.
