BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The City of Bellingham has a new official flag.
Brad Lockhart won a Downtown Bellingham Partnership flag design contest in 2015.
The design kind of became the unofficial flag of the City of Subdued Excitement.
Monday night, the city council made it official.
“The people of the city who support this flag, who fly this flag all over the place, who are bringing it all over the world are saying ‘this is who we are,'” Councilmember Pinky Vargas says.
The flag has a blue half-circle that depicts Bellingham Bay, two stars representing the Lummi and Nooksack Tribes and three wavy lines that stand for “noisy water,” which is the translation of the word “Whatcom.”
The flag also has four green stripes for the four original towns of Bellingham: Whatcom, Sehome, Bellingham and Fairhaven.
