BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A DUI driver led officers on a wild chase, attacked several with a hatchet, crashed into Bellis Fair Mall and continued his rampage inside Saturday night.
Police Lt. Claudia Murphy reports 32-year-old David A. Anderson of Bellingham fled from officers when they tried to stop him on Bakerview at about 10:30 p.m.
He led police on an authorized and monitored pursuit down Meridian to City Hall, then toward Cornwall.
He swung the hatchet at a police vehicle and damaged it, then drove at other officers while threatening them with the weapon.
He avoided spike strips, hit another person’s car on Lakeway, entered I-5 northbound and drove to the mall where he intentionally crashed into the main entrance.
He ran inside and smashed store windows and merchandise with the hatchet before officers were able to subdue him.
Police estimate that Anderson caused at least $100,000 damage to the mall and thousands more to other vehicles.
He faces multiple charges including burglary, hit and run, and assaulting officers and a fire EMT.
