BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham has a new police chief.

Mayor Seth Fleetwood has selected Rebecca Mertzig as the city’s next top cop.

She is one of three finalists for the position who took part in a virtual public forum last month.

Fleetwood calls her a “rising star” of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office with 18 years of law enforcement experience.

She also serves as police chief for the city of Stanwood, which contracts with the Snohomish County Sheriff for law enforcement.

She’s expected to take her new position on June 1st after a standard background check is completed.

Mertzig will replace interim chief Flo Simon who is retiring from the force.
