BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham Police arrested a man on a slew of charges after they say he led police on a car chase, endangered others and damaged property.

Lieutenant Danette Beckley says an officer contacted John Barber in a traffic stop at the Bakerview Fred Meyer parking lot Monday night, but he gave his cousin’s name since Barber’s license is suspended.

As the officer checked Barber’s license, Beckley says Barber sped off in the parking lot, sideswiping a mini van, and went west on Bakerview, at one point driving into oncoming traffic.

She says Barber lost control of the car near Bennett Drive, crashing into a fenced retention pond and continued to run on foot into a wooded area.

A K9 unit tracked him down and he was arrested.
