BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham Police Department is getting attention for their efforts to thwart bicycle thieves.

Sergeant Keith Johnson told KIRO the department’s property crime unit is using bait bikes equipped with GPS trackers to catch the bandits in the act.

Johnson says the number of bike thefts in Bellingham has been cut in half since the bait bike program began in 2017.

Owners can also register their bike’s serial number for free on the City’s website in case it’s ever stolen.
