BELLINGHAM, Wash. – An infant found in freezing conditions was rescued by Bellingham Police officers.
Court documents state that police were called after the child’s mother left her brother’s house in Bellingham on November 30th.
The brother told officers that the woman was too intoxicated to care for the infant, and that he believed the child was not wearing any clothes.
Temperatures at the time were in the 30’s.
An officer found the suspect pushing a stroller on Northwest Avenue, with the baby wearing only a dirty diaper and covered by a blanket.
23-year-old Kaitlyn Merkle tried to walk away with the child, and then kicked and spit at the officers as they arrested her.
Bellingham Police said that the child was clothed and fed at the station, then transferred to the Dept of Child and Family Services.
