BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Department of Labor & Industries has cited a Bellingham-based company for multiple safety and health violations.

L & I says it fined Daylight Properties more than $185,000 for multiple instances of improper handling of asbestos and lead.

The citations concerned Daylight’s renovations of several of its properties in Chehalis.

The property management company owns more than 20 buildings in Bellingham and Lynden, including the iconic Bellingham Herald building and the Leopold, but no local properties were involved in the L & I action.

Daylight CEO Kane Hall says the company disputes L & I’s findings and will appeal the citation and fines.

An L&I spokesperson says improper and unsafe lead and asbestos removal is a serious problem in Washington.
