BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham Public Library is pausing services due to stresses from the nearby homeless encampment.

Mayor Seth Fleetwood announced the changes at last night’s meeting.

Bellingham’s homeless population has been camping in tents on the lawn outside city hall and the library for the past month, protesting a lack of shelter in the cold weather.

Fleetwood said he would make an announcement regarding an end to the encampment in the coming days.

In the meantime, curbside pickups, book returns and the library call center help line are temporarily suspended.
