BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Non-English speaking families in Bellingham Schools get extra help from the district and others, including a furniture store owner.

The district’s family engagement team assists families with basic needs, everything from clothes and furniture to toothpaste.

Elie Samuel is a Bellingham resident who owns Samuel’s Furniture in Ferndale.

He provides employees and trucks to deliver furniture.

And when there’s not enough furniture to go around, he donates tables, beds, chairs, dressers and sofas to families.

He also established two scholarships for Latino students at Bellingham Public Schools.

That inspired two others to do the same, making it five scholarships in all.
